ATHENS 2004 - 13-29/8/04

ATHENS 2004 – THE JOURNEY BEGINS

On the evening of the 13th August 2004, thought at that moment I did not know it, a really wonderful journey have started.

It was the day that in spite what the international press said and did in order to, for reasons only known to them, discredit the efforts of Hellas to host the games the whole world seen and experienced a truly magical opening ceremony which was the start of the Olympic games of Athens, the country that proudly can claim that the games have started and born centuries ago.

The ‘’Sygnomi Athina’’ which translates to ‘’Athens we are sorry’’ which was the backround of CNN news casters after the end of the games and the praise of the press that only 2 weeks ago was saying that nothing is ready and nothing will work was little consolation for the people that believed them and not visited Athens. The ones that did come and lived the games are the ones that gained memories to last a lifetime.

During the games I had the chance to visit most of the venues and truly enjoy the whole atmosphere all over Athens. Yes they are games and competition is held but it is at another level, the first and the last athlete are together after, there are no winners or losers, there are participants. The spectators that are watching are next to each other and they all cheer but not ever fight or do anything against each other. They all mingle around carrying their national flags, scarves, pins or whatever smiling at each other, exchanging experiences they had and they all cheer. The color of their skin or their race or their religion does not matter, they are all one and that’s the spirit of the Olympic games.

It was what I felt all those days and especially during the closing ceremony that I had the luck to be inside the stadium and the feelings experienced that made me wanting to relive them and thus the journey began.

A journey that will follow the Olympic games, summer as well as winter, around the world but no matter were I know the feelings and experiences will be the same.

TORINO 2006

TORINO 2006  -  10-26/2/06

The second stop in the journey took me to Torino, Italy. My first winter Olympics and in many respects lots of lessons to be learned from this experience in regards of planning the next expedition as I have to admit made some mistakes.

On arrival there and in the hotel I was wondering what the hell I have done. But some times the first impressions change. I think that arriving close to midnight in a small village outside torino with the temperature below zero had something to do with it. It only took the next day, the sun that was shinning (no the temperature was not that much above zero) and finding out how relatively easy it was to travel that lifted my spirits.

Overall it was again a wonderful experience with lots gained for the future. The venues in the mountains well all fantastic even if they required half an hour walking in half a meter snow but it is the Winter games after all, you do not expect sun and warmth..

Without any prejudice to the Italians that hosted the games their organization had some to be desired. Finding anybody that you could communicate in English was like winning the lottery and I am glad that although my Italian are very poor to say the least I can understand a lot and I managed to survive the first couple of days. After that it was smooth running and always assisting the poor ones that did not understood the locals trying to direct them.

Again the atmosphere was the one of a party going on and all were together. It did not matter who you are, were you come from, what color of flag you were holding, all were one.

I was sad when the time to leave come but all good thing last so much and the second stop in the journey was over. Time to start planning the next one.

BEIJING 2008

Beijing 8-24/8/08

Another page have closed. In a few words it was an amazing, wonderfull and fantastic trip and experience. It was not only the culture that was evident everywere, it was not that i had the chance and did my day trips and visited the Great wall but the whole atmosphere which was excellent. I do wish to thank a special person who know who it is for helping me during my stay. I know that on top of everything i have made a new friend.

That was the ''good'' part. Now lets move on to the others. The black market for the tickets was horendous which shows that many tickets have not been given to the people that deserved but to other that wanted to make a quick profit. It was my first time i saw with my own eyes so many tickets being sold openly and inspite all the notices that their sale is illegal. I saw 2 europeans with a stack of about 100 tickets selling tickets for any event that you wanted and mind you all events were ''sold out'' months before the games. Also after leaving the main stadium the transportation was not what you expect. In athens the buses were leaving the one after the other half full to take the spectators away. In beijing we were being put insiude the buses like sardines after having to wait for the ''scheduled''' bus to arrive.

The volunteers were everywere. If only they could speak english also. From what i have heard the vast majority was used at the hotels, etc and for the athletes. For sure they could have arranged for some of them to be in the central locations to help all of us that we were trying to find our destination around.

However credit should be given to the chinese for building stadiums and parks that were majestic and a pleassure to see and be inside them. Overall they have staged games that were memorable and taking out the ''black spots'' wonderfull also.

Beijing thank you for the memories, we will not forget you and hope our roads to meet again.
